Guernsey Sprint Sat 11th April 2009
Two scoots this year we been busy building the racer and it really does look the business.
Sponsored by Rocquette cider - hey things are getting a bit professional.
Ben is making his debut on the racer with new 250 rapido jezspeed tuned motor. Will he be able to keep the front wheel down?
Jez on the sprinter running methanol from the start so lets see if Jez can stop the rear wheel from melting...
We've done it again! 14.00 seconds
We had the sprinter set up on Methanol as best we could - it ran anyway. After 150 metres is was overheating and I throttled back to coast over the line without going bang.
Ben went next got off to a good start on the Pocket Rocquette on his first ever run at sprinting, although I heard it was more brown left at the start line than rubber! High 17s, which is pretty good for something never ridden before and not well set up. That is what practice runs are for.
A bit of fettling with erm ignition timing, jetting, head gasket and spark plug because the first one melted and the sprinter was ready again (was there anything else that needed adjusting?). Bens needed rejetting as it was too lean up to the line.
Second run and the thing was spinning from the line and popping up into second and then overheated again so I rolled off after half way and coasted. Ben put in a very decent time of 15.71 and was leading the class.
Back at the pits the new plug had completely melted and it was obviously pinking badly. I couldn't do anything about compression but it ran nicely previously and the jetting used had been proven before as well so it had to be ignition. I had no further retard at around 23 degrees so without moving the flywheel around I wasn't going to be able to do that (It has no woodruff) so I advanced to somewhere around 30 and plugged in the advance unit. It sounded fine.
Off the line it was quick and pick up hard into second, around the corner though it felt like the rear had low pressure - it was all over the place but it revved hard through fourth over the line. 14.00 seconds - new record. I then realised when I was turning at the end the headstock had broken.
Ben had stopped at the bunker so something was up. We think he broke the gearbox.
A good day's racing in nice weather. I think that both machines have more potential, much more so with the Pocket Rocquette.
Next event is the Hill Climb at the end of May - see you there.
Jez
New motor:Under development The next motor is based around a TS. The stroke is 64mm with a 120mm Rotax rod. To achieve this the cases needed a considerable amount of welding and machining to ensure that the crank fitted but also retained stength as a very deep channel is needed in the cases for the conrod to have clearance. Additionally the cylinder needs to be 11mm longer than standard, using a Wiseco Suzuki TS250 piston. Read more here...
