Guernsey Sprint 1993
Turned up for the first time on my Lambretta to all sorts of strange looks - and laughter of course. Not the best start, I was worried about my piston and a new one had turned up that morning. Good job really as it was cracked, so I had to replace it there and then on the grass, but unfortunately it needed the inlet cutting (Suzuki piston) and so it had a low inlet timing. Consequently I managed 18.2 seconds, but this beat all the Mini classes who were laughing the most - It went quiet after that.
June saw Shaun Lawrence having a go and he did a mid 17 seconds whilst I got into the 16s.
September saw more 16s with a change of motor to a 200 TS, DT piston, internal rotor ignition but not much improvement.
In 1993 I started to use my road motor which was based around a 225 TS, YZ piston. That year we managed a 15.88 which was great although I could never work out why the same motor in road spec in a road GP managed a 15.3 at Long Marston - surely a Group 6 based machine would be much faster even though the Vazon sprint is a public highway which is not even straight? We found out a few years later when the road was resurfaced and consequently re-measured. It was far longer than 1/4 mile. They then changed the length to make it standard…..
New motor:Under development The next motor is based around a TS. The stroke is 64mm with a 120mm Rotax rod. To achieve this the cases needed a considerable amount of welding and machining to ensure that the crank fitted but also retained stength as a very deep channel is needed in the cases for the conrod to have clearance. Additionally the cylinder needs to be 11mm longer than standard, using a Wiseco Suzuki TS250 piston. Read more here...
